(Opelousas, LA) – The City of Opelousas will commemorate its 300th anniversary year with the burial of a time capsule. Mayor Alsandor and City of Opelousas officials will seal the time capsule at a special ceremony scheduled for Saturday, November 14, at 1 p.m. The Celebrate Opelousas 300 committee is inviting the public to attend the ceremony which will take place in front of Opelousas City Hall, located at 105 Main Street in Opelousas. The capsule will be sealed for 50 years and opened by future city officials and citizens in 2070.
The concept behind the project is to preserve a piece of the present for the future. The contents of the time capsule will include messages for the future such as letters from Mayor Julius Alsandor, Chief of Police Martin Mclendon, Fire Chief Charles Mason and other local officials, as well as letters from various local organizations and high schools in Opelousas. Memorabilia related to events and activities that occurred in 2020 will also be included. “This time capsule will give those in the future a glimpse of Opelousas in 2020,” said Mayor Alsandor.
All of the items will be placed into a sealed container which will then be placed inside a concrete box covered with a granite marker. The marker is being donated by Donald Lalonde with B & D Marble and Granite. At the event, the Opelousas Kiwanis Club members will offer keepsake photos which can be placed inside mini time capsule containers that will be provided to families in attendance. The Opelousas Kiwanis Club will also make a special birthday presentation to the city. The birthday cake is being made possible through Super One Foods in Opelousas.
In June of this year, a time capsule buried half a century ago in Opelousas for the city’s 250th anniversary was opened. The contents of the 1970-time capsule included items such as a letter from former Opelousas Mayor Wilfred Cortez, a key to the city, a letter and badge from former Sheriff Adler Ledoux and letters from various civic organizations.
In addition, on Sunday, November 15th, a Community Peace Picnic will be held from 2 – 5 pm at South City Park. The event, which is a Celebrate Opelousas 300 activity, is being organized by the St. Landry Parish Ministerial Alliance.
