DOWNTOWN OPELOUSAS MARDI GRAS CELEBRATION FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 24
Start off your Mardi Gras weekend with the Geno Delafose and French Rockin’ at the Historic Delta Grand Theater in Opelousas, 120 S Market Street. This free event takes place on Friday, February 24, 2016 from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 pm. The Downtown Opelousas Mardi Gras Celebration is dedicated to preserving and promoting our distinct Cajun and Creole roots that are traced back to our City’s rich history. The evening will be filled with great music, food, drinks. Also, you can find Mardi Gras costumes by Gerry Soileau and Mardi Gras teddy bears by Susan Boudreaux—featured event artists. Geno Delafose was born into a family of Zydeco musicians. He got his start at the age of eight in his father’s band, John Delafose and the Eunice Playboys. He continued to play in the band until his father’s death in 1994. His band, French Rockin’ Boogie, includes several family members. In 2007, he was nominated for a Grammy Award in the “Best Zydeco or Cajun Music Album” category for his Le Cowboy Creole album. His style is deeply rooted in traditional Creole music with strong influences from Cajun music and also country and western. Geno Delafose lives in Duralde, Louisiana near Eunice, where he operates his Double D ranch raising cattle and horses. Along with the festivities there will be food and beverages available. Because beverage sales go towards covering the cost of the band and event expenses, ice chests will not be allowed. A suggested $5 donation will be collected at the door. Feel free to bring your chairs! Sponsored by the City of Opelousas and the Delta Grand Theater.
